Meniscus Surgery
The menisci are two cartilage pads that cushion the knee and help distribute load during movement. A meniscus tear can cause sharp pain, swelling, catching, or locking — and may limit the knee’s ability to straighten fully. Tears can occur from sudden twists, deep squats, or gradual wear over time.
Why the Meniscus Matters
Healthy menisci are essential for long-term joint preservation. They absorb shock, stabilize the knee, and protect the cartilage. Preserving them whenever possible lowers the risk of arthritis.
Common Symptoms
Patients may experience:
Pain along one side of the knee
Swelling that builds over hours
Clicking, catching, or locking
Pain with twisting or deep bending
A feeling that the knee might give way
How Meniscus Tears Happen
Tears can result from:
A pivot or twist during sports
A deep squat or awkward landing
Lifting with rotation
Age-related degeneration
An associated ACL injury
Meniscus tears commonly appear with other knee condition.
Dr. Pearle’s Expertise
Dr. Pearle is a leader in arthroscopic meniscus preservation. He evaluates tear pattern, tissue quality, alignment, ligament stability, and cartilage health to determine the best approach for long-term knee protection.
How the Procedure Works
Meniscus surgery is arthroscopic and minimally invasive.
Depending on the tear, Dr. Pearle may perform:
Meniscus Repair
The torn tissue is sutured to allow healing. This approach preserves the joint and protects long-term health.
Meniscus Trim (Partial Meniscectomy)
Only the damaged portion is removed when repair is not possible. The remaining meniscus is shaped for stability while preserving as much tissue as possible.
Recovery Expectations
Recovery depends on the type of procedure:
Repair: Healing is protected early, with gradual progress toward strength and motion.
Trim: Motion and comfort return more quickly, allowing earlier return to activity.
Rehabilitation is tailored to support smooth motion, balanced strength, and long-term joint health.
Care at HSS
All procedures are performed at the Hospital for Special Surgery, the nation’s #1 orthopedic hospital, offering advanced imaging, specialized anesthesia, orthopedic nursing, and expert rehabilitation.
The Goal
To relieve pain, restore smooth motion, and protect the knee for long-term activity.
